4.6

按彼論云：「問：若有段物亦是食耶？設是食者亦段物耶？答：如其所應當作四句：或有段物而非是食，謂諸段物不能長養諸根大種；或有是食而非段物，謂若有觸意思及識，能令諸根大種長養；或有是食亦是段物，謂諸段物能令諸根大種長養；或非段物亦非是食，謂若有觸意思及識，不能長養諸根大種，如是所餘觸乃至識隨其所應皆作四句。」

According to that treatise: 'Question: If there is material substance, is it also nutriment? Supposing it is nutriment, is it also material substance? Answer: As appropriate, four alternatives should be made: There may be material substance that is not nutriment, meaning material substances that cannot nourish the faculties and great elements; there may be nutriment that is not material substance, meaning if there is contact, volition, or consciousness that can cause the faculties and great elements to be nourished; there may be that which is both nutriment and material substance, meaning material substances that can cause the faculties and great elements to be nourished; there may be that which is neither material substance nor nutriment, meaning if there is contact, volition, or consciousness that cannot nourish the faculties and great elements. As with this, the remaining contact up to consciousness form four alternatives as appropriate.'
