According to the first fascicle of Asabhāva's Mahāyānasaṃgraha: "It cannot be said to be in the fourth dhyāna, because of the distinction in stage, being in the summit of existence; and because of the distinction in aspiration for renunciation versus tranquil abiding." The distinction between the two absorptions mentions only the two differences of preparatory application and stage. Furthermore, according to the fifth fascicle of the Abhidharmakośa, there are ten distinctions: First, difference in stage, namely the distinction between the fourth dhyāna and the summit of existence. Second, difference in preparatory application, the distinction between the two notions of renunciation versus cessation. Third, difference in continuity, because the bodies of ordinary worldlings and noble ones are different. Fourth, difference in retribution produced, the difference in the retribution of five aggregates versus four aggregates. Fifth, difference in karmic fruition, the distinction between experiencing only in the next birth versus experiencing in subsequent births. Sixth, difference in initial arising, the non-conceptual in two realms, the absorption of cessation only among humans. Seventh, difference in falling back, the distinction between attaining without undergoing another birth versus undergoing another birth. Eighth, difference in name. Ninth, difference in returning or not returning, like an arrow shot into space that without defilements does not return. Tenth, difference in the two attainments: the former is only by preparatory application, the latter covers both attainments; detachment from defilement belongs only to Buddhas, preparatory application to other noble ones. Matching them respectively to the non-conceptual absorption and the absorption of cessation, these are the two distinctions.
