4.683

論：此中顯示現神通化，為菩薩時示現種種陶師等類工巧等處，此是智上身業相現，為摧傲慢故現斯事。善巧方便即是悲慧平等，運道先現神通先令生信，故名引生令入聖教，如現神通度迦葉等。次令調順有所堪能故名成就，引令長養諸善根故，後令解脫三界惡趣。

Treatise: Here is revealed the transformation of manifesting supernatural powers. When he was a bodhisattva, he manifested various crafts such as potters; this is the manifestation of physical actions based on wisdom. To crush arrogance, he manifested these things. Skillful means is the equality of compassion and wisdom. Carrying out the path, he first manifests supernatural powers to first inspire faith, hence called 'leading sentient beings to enter the noble teaching', as when manifesting supernatural powers to convert Kāśyapa and others. Next, causing them to be subdued and capable is called 'achievement', because it leads them to cultivate all wholesome roots; afterwards, it liberates them from the bad destinies of the three realms.
