4.730

了別定所緣等，是第一因。由此俱生耳識，是第二因。顯定意識能緣定境及非定境，故說種種。所緣境言，定境法處；種種境者，通五塵等。

Discerning the object of samādhi and so forth is the first reason. The co-arising ear-consciousness on this basis is the second reason. It shows that the mental consciousness in samādhi can cognize meditative objects as well as non-meditative objects; hence it says 'various'. The phrase 'cognized object' refers to the dharmāyatana as the meditative object; 'various objects' encompasses the five sensory fields and so forth.
