There are briefly three explanations. Because that bodily comportment mostly relies upon roads/paths, it receives the designation "path". First, it is said: Bodily comportment is just manifest form, and the path consists of the four sense objects; the four sense objects are that upon which that bodily comportment depends, hence called the "path of bodily comportment". Second, it is said: Bodily comportment has the four sense objects as its nature, and the mind that gives rise to it is called the "path", because it serves as their support; both are dependent determinative compounds (tatpuruṣa). Third, it is said: The four sense objects are collectively called bodily comportment, because they are not separated from the form of bodily comportment; being that upon which the mind depends, they are called the "path", which is an appositional compound (karmadhāraya). The mind that cognizes that path of bodily comportment is in all cases a dependent determinative compound. Explaining "field of craftsmanship", there are also three explanations. Because that craftsmanship is mostly established relying upon locations/bases, it receives the designation "field" (āyatana). First, it is said: Craftsmanship refers to the two, bodily and vocal. Bodily craftsmanship takes the manifest form of long, etc., that constructs halls and buildings as its essence; the field is the manifest form, which takes its supporting form, smell, taste, and tangibles as its nature. Vocal craftsmanship, such as singing, takes the emitted sound as its essence; the field is the five sense objects upon which singing and so forth depend. Second, it is said: The four sense objects and five sense objects are called craftsmanship, and that which can give rise to that mind is called the field, because it serves as their support; both are dependent determinative compounds. Third, it is said: Craftsmanship is itself called the field, because the four and five sense objects are what the mind depends on, designated as an appositional compound. The mind that cognizes the field of craftsmanship is in all cases a dependent determinative compound.
