There is more than one holy teaching explaining this greed and so forth; in general purport, Asaṅga merely differs in being extensive or brief. Because the author's intentional selections also differ, we now cite different essentials, leaving aside the burdensome identical points. Fascicle 1 of the Xianyang says: Karma is of five kinds: having the function of obstructing non-greed; having the function of obstructing the complete fulfillment of the provisions for Bodhi; having the function of harming oneself and others; having the function of leading to the evil destinies; and having the function of augmenting greedy desire. The actions of the remaining [afflictions such as] anger also have five kinds: the first and the last two differ; the middle three are entirely the same, which can be understood by reflection. In Fascicle 55 [of the Yogācārabhūmi], greed arises from ten occasions: first, the aggregates of appropriation; second, the various views; third, unobtained objects; fourth, already obtained objects; fifth, past objects already enjoyed; sixth, bad conduct; seventh, men and women; eighth, relatives; ninth, requisites; tenth, future existence and non-existence.
