If someone asks about those fourteen matters, one should not explain them; because they lack benefit, they are called undeclared (avyākṛta). As for these fourteen, according to the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra: 'Is the world eternal? Is it non-eternal? Is it both eternal and non-eternal? Is it neither eternal nor non-eternal?'—these make four. 'Is the world finite? Is it infinite?' and so on make four. 'Does the Tathāgata exist after death? Does he not exist? Does he both exist and not exist? Does he neither exist nor not exist?'—these make four. 'Are the life-principle (jīva) and the body identical?' is one; 'Are the life-principle and the body different?' is one. Together they make fourteen.
