According to the Mahāvibhāṣā: 'Those of reasoning and investigation grasp form as the self; seeing that sometimes, pressed by deep sleep, stupor, or painful sensation, [sentient beings] seem completely devoid of conception, they then think: Although my self has form, it is without conception; just as it is in this world, so it is in the other world. It is due to this that they say: "Without conception after death."' Based on this, it is not necessarily conceptualising rebirth into the unconscious that is called unconscious; this differs from the previous conceptualisation of the unconscious by obtaining absorption. The previous [passages regarding] having suffering and so forth should also be understood based on this.
