5.443

依宿住計如《疏》所明。依尋、伺者，按《婆沙》云：二由尋、伺，虛妄推求今身所更既皆能憶，前身若有彼所更事今亦應憶。既不能憶，故知彼無。餘如章辨。

Those based on the recollection of past lives are as explained in the Commentary. Regarding those based on reasoning and investigation, according to the Mahāvibhāṣā: 'Two [are held] through reasoning and investigation: by falsely inferring that, since one can remember all that has been experienced in the present life, if there were a previous life one should also be able to remember what was experienced there; since one cannot remember it, one therefore knows it does not exist.' The rest is differentiated as in the chapter.
