According to the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*: "Among the afflictions of the desire realm, except for ignorance, [wrong] views, and doubt, the rest cannot take higher stages as cognitive object." Although among these [afflictions of] ignorance and so forth there are also those that can take higher stages as object, they cannot directly take higher stages as object. The *Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā* explains: "The statement that ignorance takes higher stages as object means that it is associated with views and so forth. 'Views' excludes the view of personal identity (satkāyadṛṣṭi), because one does not see people in the world taking the dharmas of another stage as cognitive object and grasping them as self." Furthermore, the *Yogācārabhūmi*, fascicle fifty-eight, says: "Afflictions of higher stages cannot take afflictions and concrete phenomena of lower stages as object."
