Answer: According to roll 77 of the Great Treatise: "When the mind is restless or fears restlessness, attention directed toward repulsive dharmas and mental attention immediately following it is called the mark of calming. When the mind is sunken or fears sinking, attention directed toward inspiring dharmas and attention to the marks of that mind is called the mark of exertion. When, in the path of one-pointed calming, or in the path of one-pointed insight, or in the path of their yoked pair, one is defiled by the two secondary defilements, attention without effort and whatever attention occurs as the mind proceeds spontaneously is called the mark of equanimity."
