According to the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra, the Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the World-Honoured One: "Should the reflected image that is the domain of all vipaśyanā samādhi be said to be different from this mind, or not different?" "Good son, it should be said to be not different. Why? Because that reflected image is only consciousness. Good son, I say that the objective referent of consciousness is only what is manifested by consciousness." "World-Honoured One, if that reflected image that is its domain is not different from this mind, how does this mind look back upon this mind?" "Good son, herein there is no minute phenomenon capable of seeing a minute phenomenon; yet when this mind arises in such a way, such a reflected image appears. Good son, just as based upon a well-polished, pure mirror surface, using the model as a condition, one looks back and sees the original model, yet supposes, 'I am now seeing an image,' and supposes that apart from the model, a distinct reflected image that is the domain has appeared in this way. When this mind arises, it is similar: an apparently distinct reflected image that is the domain of samādhi appears." "World-Honoured One, when sentient beings abide in their natural state, are the reflected images that are the domain of the mind apprehending form and so forth also not different from this mind?" "Good son, they are also not different; yet ordinary beings, through inverted perception regarding the reflected images, fail to know in accord with reality that they are only consciousness, and form inverted understandings." Asabhāva's Mahāyānasaṃgraha-bhāṣya, fascicle four, explains: "Samādhi is that which enables the mind to abide in one-pointedness, having the mental factor [of concentration] as its entity. This objective referent is called the domain; the original object is called the model, and that which appears resembling it is called the reflected image. Because in all phenomena neither activity nor an agent can be established, it is said that 'no minute phenomenon can grasp a minute phenomenon.' For example, relying on the model of one's own face and so forth, in a mirror and so forth one looks back and sees the original model; through deluded confusion, one says 'I see an image.' Because the power of the conditions of the mirror and so forth is great, although there is no distinct image, an apparently distinct reflected image appears; this mind is also like this."
