答：有二釋，一云，約十二處，本識意處之所攝故名之為內，作意法處故名外也；二、唯第八識，若種若現生根本故，獨名為內，所餘諸緣非根本故，皆名為外。《論》依後說。

Answer: There are two explanations. One says: In terms of the twelve āyatanas, because the fundamental consciousness is subsumed under the manāyatana, it is called internal; attention is of the dharmāyatana, and therefore called external. Second: Only the eighth consciousness, because it is the fundamental cause for the arising of seeds and actual manifestations, is solely called internal; all other conditions, not being fundamental, are all called external. The Treatise relies on the latter explanation.
