Answer: The other's seed serves as the mūla-dharmin, and one's own seed serves as the reflection; if there were more or fewer, there would be the fault of the mūla-dharmin and the reflection not matching. If one says: 'What fault is there in their not matching?', then there would be various errors such as a blue mūla-dharmin yielding a yellow nimitta. Furthermore, if one manifested another's seeds, there would be the fault of confounding noble and ordinary beings. For example, if the eighth consciousness of an ordinary person took the untainted [seeds] of a noble one as an object, the ordinary person would become a noble one because of possessing untainted [seeds]; and if the noble ones of the two vehicles took the seeds of an ordinary person as an object, they would turn back into ordinary beings because of being fully endowed with seeds of affliction. If one says: 'The eighth consciousness of an ordinary person does not take untainted seeds as an object'—if so, the ordinary person might be free of contradiction, but the noble one taking tainted seeds as an object would still incur the fault of acquiring seeds of affliction.
