According to the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya, fascicle 5, the sovereign condition has nine predominances, and the latter six predominances are established based on those twenty-two faculties. Therefore, that treatise says: 'These latter predominances are established based on the twenty-two faculties. Predominance regarding the domain refers to eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, because through this sovereign power form and so forth arise. Predominance regarding generation refers to the male and female faculties, because through this sovereign power one is able to enter the womb. Predominance regarding sustaining refers to the life faculty, because through this sovereign power the generic similarity (nikāya-sabhāga) is able to abide. Predominance regarding the enjoyment of results refers to the faculties of pain, pleasure, grief, joy, and equanimity, because relying on these one experiences agreeable and disagreeable maturation. Predominance regarding worldly purification and dispassion refers to the five faculties of faith and so forth, because through these one suppresses the afflictions. Predominance regarding supramundane purification and dispassion refers to the three untainted faculties, because through these one permanently destroys the latencies (anuśaya) of afflictions.' It also says: 'What are faculties? How many are faculties? For what purpose are faculties observed? They are: predominance in grasping the domain; predominance in the non-interruption of the family lineage; predominance in the abiding of the generic similarity; predominance in enjoying the results of pure and impure karma; predominance in worldly dispassion; predominance in supramundane dispassion. Among these faculties, predominance in the domain refers to the six such as the eye, because through this sovereign power the mind and mental factors operate regarding domains such as form. Predominance in the non-interruption of the family lineage refers to the male and female faculties, because through this sovereign power offspring such as sons and grandsons perpetuate unceasingly. The rest are as explained before. It is in order to abandon attachment to a sovereign self that one observes the faculties.'
