While the generated meritorious [karmas] and so forth are of three kinds, the generating ignorance is only of two kinds. According to the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya: Non-meritorious volitional activities are generated due to delusion regarding maturation; because they are exclusively defiled by nature, when conjoined with ignorance they inevitably do not allow right view whose cognitive aspect is resolute faith regarding maturation. Meritorious and immovable volitional activities are generated due to delusion regarding ultimate reality. 'Ultimate reality' refers to the four noble truths; being deluded regarding them is called 'delusion regarding ultimate reality.' One who has not yet seen the truths, even though generating wholesome minds, is also called 'deluded' because they are accompanied and influenced by its dormant defilements (anuśaya). Through its power, not knowing truly the suffering of the three realms, they are able to initiate meritorious and immovable volitional activities that have the nature of being causes for future existence.
