According to the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 10: "Because of being bound by afflictions, they repeatedly arise in the various destinies; hence it is named 'dependent origination' (pratītyasamutpāda)—this explains the name based on the etymology. Furthermore, relying upon manifold conditions, having swiftly perished, it continuously arises in combination; hence it is named 'dependent origination'—this explains it based on the meaning of momentariness. Furthermore, although the manifold conditions have passed into the past, they are not abandoned, and based on their own continuum they are able to arise; hence it is named 'dependent origination.' As it is said: 'When this exists, that exists; from the arising of this, that arises,' and not otherwise—it should be known that this explains the name based on its meaning. Furthermore, repeatedly perishing, it again arises in continuity; hence it is named 'dependent origination'—this explains it based on the meaning of repeated destruction and repeated cessation. Furthermore, having awakened to conditionality in past times, it arises in equal continuity; hence it is named 'dependent origination.' As the World-Honoured One said: 'Having awakened, I am now correctly setting forth and expounding it.' It is precisely from this name being transmitted successively that it is named 'dependent origination.'" The citation in the Commentary is abbreviated and difficult for beginners to distinguish, so it is recorded fully here.
