The physical body of fragmented birth is called a "worm-ridden body" because there are worms in the body. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra, fascicles 326 and 448, states: "Subhūti! The body and mind of a non-retrogressing bodhisattva are pure, not like those of ordinary persons whose bodies are constantly invaded and devoured by eighty thousand families of worms. Why is this? These bodhisattvas have superior roots of goodness that surpass the world; the bodily forms they assume are pure inside and out, and therefore no classes of worms invade and devour their bodies. Just as their roots of goodness gradually increase, so too their body and mind become increasingly pure; due to this condition, the bodies and minds of these bodhisattvas are solid like vajra and are not plagued or tormented by adverse conditions."
