The Commentary has two explanations. The intention of the first explanation is: Due to the grasping mind clinging to self and dharmas, it perfuses and produces seeds. Although seeds have real substance, because they are perfumed and produced by the calculating mind and so forth on the basis of the imagined self and dharmas, the seeds are termed the first nature; it is not that distinct seeds of what is imagined are perfumed. Or alternatively, the active imagination is metaphorically termed the imagined [object], and the seeds perfumed thereby are metaphorically termed the first nature by association with the perfuming mind. The second intention is: The grasping mind clings to those vasanas as the object of its imagination; the vasana-perfuming is the locus of that grasping, and is metaphorically termed the imagined [nature] on the basis of that which depends on it.
