The three general points have already been clarified in the Commentary. Following the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*, four further hindrances are eliminated in taking phenomena and meaning as objects; thus Asabhāva's *Commentary*, fascicle six, speaks of eliminating the four hindrances. First, "by leaving the mental application of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, because of abandoning mental application": The explanation states: "By" means the sense of cause. By leaving the hindrance of mental application, one is able to enter into the characteristics of what is to be known; the remaining three should be understood accordingly. Making clear the reason for leaving the hindrance of mental application is called "abandoning mental application." "Abandoning" means suppressing and abandoning; the other hindrances are the same. This makes clear that an initial bodhisattva sees the suffering of birth-and-death and the bliss of nirvāṇa, desires to abandon birth-and-death, and joyfully aspires toward nirvāṇa; this is called "mental application of the two vehicles." Because it obstructs great bodhi, it must be abandoned first. By contemplating that birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are identical in having the nature of signlessness, and by practicing great compassion, one abandons the mental application of grasping small-vehicle birth-and-death; the mental application itself is the hindrance. Alternatively, it refers to those of the two vehicles beyond training who grasp their own vehicle as the ultimate and do not proceed toward the Mahāyāna; or those of the two vehicles still in training who grasp the pursuit of the two fruits and take no joy in the Mahāyāna; or ordinary persons of the two vehicles before the path of seeing who joyfully seek the two fruits. All these are called mental application of the two vehicles.
