Answer: There are four explanations: First, being able to abandon those doubts is called "leaving doubt." Second, "the various doubts" refers to persons of the two vehicles, while "leaving doubt" refers to gradual and sudden bodhisattvas. Third, various lesser bodhisattvas of indeterminate lineage, although having previously given rise to the mind [of awakening], perceive the great practices as a precipitous cliff and repeatedly regress in dejection, whereupon they give rise to doubtful thoughts. Considering whether they will attain or not attain is called "the various doubts." Desiring to settle on the two vehicles and giving rise to certainty in mind is called "leaving doubt." Fourth, various lesser bodhisattvas initially give rise to doubts regarding the differences among the explicit and implicit three baskets taught by the Buddha; this is called "the various doubts." Later, grasping one as correct and censuring the others as incorrect, they make a resolution on their own; this is called "leaving doubt." In fact they have not awakened, but based on that false understanding, it is called "leaving doubt."
