Namely, the unpeaceful nature induced by painful feeling in the desire realm is called the crude heaviness of pain. The power of the first dhyāna is weak; it has not yet been able to generate extraordinary joy and bliss and superior pliancy, and because it has not yet pervaded with delight, it has not yet been able to sever that crude heaviness of pain. The second dhyāna is contrary to it, so only there is it severed. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 81, says: Question: When separating from desire and defilement, grief and pain are severed; why does the discourse say that pain is extinguished in the second dhyāna?
