7.77

有義：《疏》說共相，如因明說，無別體性，不可言常，故「常」言簡。今解：此依《佛地經》，說苦、無常等。有義：共相雖可稱遍，由生滅故，不名成就。又《佛地經》所說共相唯遮無表，苦、無常等具有遮、表。前無性故，後生滅故，俱不可常，皆遮簡也。

One interpretation says: The common characteristic explained in the Commentary is as stated in Hetuvidyā, having no distinct real essence and incapable of being called permanent; hence the word "permanent" excludes it. A current interpretation explains: This relies on the Buddhabhūmi-sūtra, speaking of suffering, impermanence, and so forth. Another interpretation says: Although common characteristics can be termed pervasive, because of arising and ceasing they are not called accomplished. Furthermore, the common characteristics stated in the Buddhabhūmi-sūtra are purely exclusionary (apoha) without positive affirmation (vidhi), whereas suffering, impermanence, and so forth possess both exclusion and positive affirmation. Because the former lack real nature and the latter undergo arising and ceasing, neither can be permanent, and both are excluded.
