1.104

The Commentary says: Among the objections concerning causal efficacy, this is the second: dream food and drink and the like lack real function. These are the four requisites for sustaining the body: first, food and drink; second, clothing; third, medicine—and 'so forth' includes the fourth, bedding; however, here knives, staves, and poisons are added. Medicine encompasses two kinds: poisonous and non-poisonous. That is, since there is no real object, yet you grant that consciousness can arise, why does drinking wine or the like in a dream lack the function of intoxication, confusion, and the like, while drinking and so forth at other times has the function of intoxication and the like? The inference says: Drinking and so forth in a dream should possess real function; because this consciousness arises while maintaining that there is no real object; just like drinking and so forth at other times.
