Commentary: Below is the direct explanation of the indetermination of continuum: as many hungry ghosts, having committed shared evil karma, receive shared bad results together, when they gather in large numbers in one place, they all together see a river of pus, which is indetermination of continuum; it is not that in regard to the river of pus, only one alone definitely sees it and another cannot see it, like someone with cataracts seeing hairs, flies, and so forth. Therefore, although there is no real object, indetermination of continuum is also established in meaning. The non-Buddhists, the Hīnayāna, the Sautrāntikas, and others all believe that hungry ghosts together see a river of pus, hence it is used as a simile. The inference says: "At the same time and in the same place, indetermination of continuum is established in principle; because it is accepted that there is no real object; like the river of pus seen by hungry ghosts." However, the verse's "rivers of pus" further has the word "and the like" (等); what things are included by "and the like"?
