The Commentary says: Those distinct great elements give rise to superior shape-form, their bodies having coarseness and fineness; they give rise to superior color-form, their bodies being red or black; they give rise to distinct appearances and sizes, either long or short. The power of their tangible base is either strong or weak, with various distinctions. In comparison to the suffering sinners, these shapes, colors, and so forth are all powerful and mighty, and therefore are all called 'superior.' These shapes, colors, and so on are all produced by karma; upon them, the designations of hell-wardens, dogs, crows, and so forth are conventionally posited. Onto insentient things, names of sentient beings are falsely designated; this is called 'conventionally positing.' This shows that the intrinsic nature of the phenomenon does not belong to the category of sentient beings; it is merely shapes and so forth arisen from karma-produced great elements external to the mind, upon which false names are conventionally posited as hell-wardens and the like.
