The Commentary says: In the Saṃghāta hell there are two mountains whose contours resemble rams; when they are somewhat far apart, this is called 'parting,' and the sinners dwell between them. When the mountains press against each other to inflict anguish, crushing bones and pulverizing flesh, this is called 'clashing together.' Having clashed, they part again, and the sinners revive; parting and clashing in this manner over an immeasurable time, they cause the sinners to endure all kinds of anguish, crushed and then reunited. The old translation said 'black sheep,' to indicate their black color. The present version says 'rams,' their action being like fighting each other. The rest is not so; things other than rams are not also called 'black sheep,' so relying on the Sanskrit text, it simply says 'rams.'
