The commentary says: Because in the Buddha's sūtras it is taught that there is no sentient being, self, or the eight items such as a living being (jīva), but only dharmas, only causes. What arises from causes—the cause being that from which [things] originate—the dharmas from which they arise are all called 'causes'; there is no real entity whatsoever. Therefore, one knows that spontaneous birth was spoken of with an intentional meaning. However, the verse in the older translation says: 'There are no sentient beings or self; there are only causes and effects of dharmas.' Now, collating the three Sanskrit manuscripts, none of them contains the word 'effect' (phala); rather, they contain the word 'because' (hetu/tasmāt). It is because of this sūtra that one knows the teaching of spontaneous birth is an intentional teaching; if there were no 'because', the principle would not be established, since it would lack a reason to establish it.
