The commentary says: 'The six pairs of dharmas' refers to the twelve bases: the six internal bases and the six external bases, namely the faculties and the objects, by virtue of the teaching on the twelve bases. If one understands that the six consciousnesses arise from the six pairs of dharmas—faculties and objects—one realizes that in one's own body only the eye can see, and there is no seer whatsoever; up to realizing that only the mind knows dharmas, and there is no knower whatsoever. Here, 'seer' and so forth refer to the substantially real self capable [of action] that non-Buddhists and others grasp; by understanding faculties and objects, the grasp of a self is eliminated.
