Answer: The Cheng weishi lun states: Because the real nature of consciousness is not separate from consciousness, it is called vijñapti-mātra; it is not like mental factors, which are called "only mental factors" and not called vijñapti-mātra. Tathatā is also the real nature of mental factors, and may also be called "only mental factors," because this principle applies throughout. In this place, the older translations gave a separate verse to establish the thesis of the treatise. Paramārtha's verse says: "There are truly no external dusts, / Because consciousness arises resembling dust, / Just like a person with cataracts / Sees hairs, two moons, and so forth." Bodhiruci says: "Consciousness-only has no sensory objects, / Because there is no false seeing, / Just as a person whose eyes have cataracts / Sees things like hairs and the moon." Although their principle is not in contradiction, upon checking three Sanskrit manuscripts, none contains this verse; it was merely an addition by the translators.
