2.118

述曰：初段之中，第四反破外境實執，合有五頌，上來四頌，初之一頌，合破小乘、外道二執；其次三頌，正破小乘；下第五頌，正破外道。設破小乘，於中有八，初、勝論師等咸作是言：且置極微猶未遮我外色等相；二、論主問；三、外人答；四、論主徵；五、外人問；六、論主難；七、正量部等救；八、論主破。此即初也，勝論等言：前來極微何用思擇，然汝大乘猶未能遮我宗等立外色等相。

Commentary: Within the first section, the fourth is the counter-refutation of the grasping at real external objects, comprising five verses in total. Among the four verses above, the first one jointly refutes the two graspings of Hīnayāna and non-Buddhists; the next three verses directly refute Hīnayāna; the fifth verse below directly refutes non-Buddhists. In positing the refutation of Hīnayāna, there are eight parts within it: first, the Vaiśeṣikas and others all state: "Set aside paramāṇus for now; you have still not refuted our characteristics of external forms and the like"; second, the author's question; third, the opponent's reply; fourth, the author's investigation; fifth, the opponent's inquiry; sixth, the author's objection; seventh, the rescue by the Saṃmatīyas and others; eighth, the author's refutation. This is the first: the Vaiśeṣikas and others say, "What was the use of scrutinizing paramāṇus previously? You in the Mahāyāna have still not been able to refute the characteristics of external forms and the like posited by our schools and others."
