前來總議外五處故，不是唯言於色處法。今此文略且言眼境，非耳等境，此中不破彼執為多。然此牒計，於下四難，一一應敘。凡難義法，牒方難故，今恐文繁，最初總敘，下別為難。

Because earlier the external five sense spheres were discussed in general, it is not merely talking about the phenomena of the form-sphere. Here the text is brief and provisionally speaks of the visual object, not the auditory object and so forth; it does not refute here their assertion of multiplicity. However, this restatement of their thesis should be rehearsed for each of the four refutations below. As a rule for making an objection, one first restates the thesis and then raises the difficulty; now, fearing excessive length, it presents a general summary first, and then raises the specific objections below.
