Commentary: This is the fourth difficulty. If the object is held to be one, how could there be two things, elephants and horses, such that this is where they reach, in between they do not reach, and empty space is seen? One should frame an inference: When two things, an elephant and a horse, occupy a single place without intervals, there should not be empty space between them; because you hold it to be one; just like grasping a pearl with the hand. The previous third difficulty was based on the locus of reliance being one, refuting the multiple intervals among the dependent elephants and so forth as impossible. This fourth difficulty is based on the two dependent things: with the ground of reliance being one, in between there should be no empty gap; this is the difference between the two. The previous "multiple things with intervals" and this "having intervals" together explain "multiple things with intervals" in the third line of the earlier verse. The verse in the older translation merely said: "and many things of different kinds"; it did not include this fourth difficulty. Therefore, examining this now, the superior and inferior are easily clarified.
