Commentary: Before attaining the awakening of true cognition, one cannot know by oneself that what is seen in the dream of saṃsāra is definitely not real; this is the correct principle explaining this verse text. Or it is clarified by analogy: just as in the world, until awakened, one cannot know by oneself that what is seen by the dream mind is definitely not real. It is also like this when awake. Explaining the objection by means of an analogy, this half verse can be understood in both senses of doctrine and analogy without contradiction. The second line of the old treatise is stated first here. What is the first line here was stated second in the old treatise. The old followed the Sanskrit text, while the present follows Chinese word order; there is no discrepancy either; all the verses above and below should be understood in this way.
