Commentary: Below it is explained through principle; this explains the word 'dream' in the second line of the verse. Consciousness in saṃsāra does not correspond to real principle, so it is said to be 'false'; since beginningless time it has repeatedly perfumed and arisen, so it is called 'habituated'; covered and obstructed by hindrances and entanglements, it is called 'stupor'; scorched by the fire of poisons, it is designated as 'fever'. Alternatively, habituated ignorance is called 'stupor'; noble cognition not arising is called 'fever'; just as worldly consciousness repeatedly habituated in darkness and torpid sleep is called a 'dream'. Saṃsāra is also like this: 'sleep' has the meaning of stupor and fever, and 'dream' is an alternate name for the sleeping mind; that is, saṃsāra is called the world, as the sūtra speaks of the long night of saṃsāra.
