Commentary: 'As appropriate' indicates that the meaning is not fixed. Through the adhipati-pratyaya, if one associates with a good friend and hears the true Dharma, right consciousness becomes determined in one's own continuity; if one associates with a bad friend and hears false teachings, wrong consciousness becomes determined in one's own continuity. Alternatively, when associating with good or bad friends and through mutually serving as adhipati-pratyayas, the one who expounds the Dharma has [the determination of] right or wrong compassion and affection, and the one who listens to the Dharma has [the determination of] right or wrong wisdom: the two consciousnesses become determined. The words 'the two consciousnesses become determined as appropriate' indicate this since it has not yet been specified.
