述曰：此下返詰。上半頌，不許前說詰林等空，云何由仙忿；下半頌，彼若救義，詰非意云何成大罪。舊論由此遂分二段，前後別明。初句等者，等下二林，文意易詳，至下當悉。

Commentary: The following poses a counter-examination. The upper half of the verse, assuming they do not accept the previous explanation, questions how the emptying of the Daṇḍaka and other forests could be due to the wrath of the ṛṣis. The lower half of the verse, if they attempt a rescue of their position, questions how, if it was not mental, it could constitute the greatest sin. The older translation consequently divided this into two sections, explaining before and after separately. 'And the like' in the first line includes the other two forests below. The meaning of the text is easy to understand, and will be explained fully below.
