The householder replied: "I shall give you a simile: Suppose a man is exceedingly foolish by nature and takes a clever wife. After marriage, she becomes pregnant. The wife says: 'When the child is born, he will need a plaything.' She tells her husband to seek one in advance. The husband then finds a young monkey and brings it back to his wife. The wife says to her husband: 'You must wash, dye, and pound it; only then will it be fit as a plaything.' The husband takes it to hire someone to wash, dye, and pound it. The other person says to him: 'One can indeed wash it, but how could one dye and pound it? If this were cloth, these three things could be done; a monkey is not like that—how could it be done?' The other washes it for him. After the washing is finished, he places it in boiling broth to dye the monkey; its skin and flesh are immediately rotten and destroyed. When he later takes it to pound it, its form and appearance are entirely lost, and it is no longer fit to be a child's plaything. Your teaching is just like this: since it is not a pure thing, it can only be washed, but cannot be retained and upheld, just as it cannot be dyed; it cannot be practiced, just as it cannot be pounded. How could you have me retain, uphold, and train in it?" Jñātiputra was thereupon ashamed and departed. This refers to that incident; hence it says "counter-questioned". However, chapter twenty-seven of the Mahāvibhāṣā also contains this passage.
