The commentary says: "Gautama" was formerly rendered as Qútán, translated here as "sugarcane lineage", or "sun-parched lineage", or "cow-dung lineage", etc., as traditionally explained. The Buddha belongs to this lineage and is called Gautama. The householder answered the Buddha: "Although I did not see it myself, I have heard that through such events as described above, because of the ascetics' mental wrath, the kingdoms turned into forests, and so they became empty and desolate." Because of what is said here, the ascetics' mental rage killed the sentient beings of these three kingdoms, and the kingdoms turned into forests. Hence we know that due to the predominant power (adhipatitva) of the transformation of another's consciousnesses, other sentient beings die, and it is not that bodily or verbal [actions] directly kill them. According to the sūtra, it only asks generally about the ascetics' mental killing, whereas the present treatise specifies that the ascetics killed [the inhabitants of] three kingdoms.
