The Commentary states: This explains the latter half of the verse, interrogating [the point that] mental chastisement is the greatest. If spirits and deities performed the killing, why would the World-Honoured One adduce that forest affair, question the householder in turn, and establish that mental chastisement is of the nature of a grave offense, surpassing [that of] body and speech? Because in that case the killing would reside in body and speech, and the mental offense would not be the greatest. As the Kośa states, among the three forms of chastisement and action, when compared among themselves, mental chastisement is the greatest; among the five acts of immediate [retribution], schism in the Saṅgha is the greatest; and among the five erroneous views, wrong view is the greatest. Therefore we know that mentally killing immeasurable sentient beings surpasses the offense of schism in the Saṅgha, for schism in the Saṅgha is [an act of] deceitful speech. If so, the treatises state that schism in the Saṅgha is capable of inducing the evil ripening fruit of one kalpa in the Avīci [hell]; what fruit does mental killing induce here? In the Mahāyāna it is said: it induces an Avīci fruit endured for immeasurable kalpas, surpassing schism in the Saṅgha; named from the initial [life], it is in every case called retribution in the next birth. The five acts of immediate [retribution] are established as corporeal courses of action; among them the heaviest is schism in the Saṅgha, but schism in the Saṅgha cannot surpass mental chastisement in gravity, and so it is said that mental chastisement is of the nature of a grave offense. The Kośa also states: alternatively, based on the greatness of the fruit, schism in the Saṅgha is said to be heavy; based on harming many sentient beings, mental chastisement is said to be great; based on severing all wholesome roots, wrong view is said to be heavy. According to their school, the offense is indeed great, but when subsequently inducing the fruit, although it lasts for only one kalpa, double that of schism in the Saṅgha, endurance in Avīci and the like are all retributions in the next birth, and so it cannot induce the Avīci fruit over multiple births—unlike the Mahāyāna.
