Commentary: Below this there are two parts: first, briefly setting forth as a whole the praise of its profundity and deferring to the Buddha; second, broadly and individually explaining the conclusion of the composition and deferring to its profundity. In the first part, it first praises the profundity and then defers to the Buddha; this is the first. 'Principles' (lǐ) means reasoned principles; 'import' (qù) means the directed inclination and the destination reached. 'Boundless' means without limits. 'Discrimination' (viniścaya) means determining, resolving, and selecting by means of awakened wisdom: 'determining' eliminates defiled doubt; 'selecting' eliminates wrong views. Wrong views determine without selecting, while doubt selects without determining. Here, to show that the measured dharmas realized by wisdom differ from the spheres traversed by wrong views and doubt, it says 'discrimination'. 'Categories' means streams of similar kinds; 'differentiation' means difference in substance. Because it is vast, it is 'difficult to measure'; because it is bottomless, it is 'exceedingly profound'. The intention here is to say that regarding the principles and import of vijñapti-mātra, its categories of discrimination have boundless differentiations, vastly extended and difficult to cross over, bottomless and exceedingly profound; it praises its possessing boundless, deep, and broad principles and import.
