2.41

Commentary: Next is answering the untenability, consisting of two verses in total, specifically refuting the Hīnayāna. Herein there are two parts: the first two verses refute the untenability of atoms having conjunction or non-conjunction; the latter one verse refutes the untenability of atoms having parts or lacking parts. Within the first section, it is again divided into two: first, answering that conjunction and so forth are untenable; second, concluding the untenability. In answering that conjunction and so forth are untenable, since there are two verses, it is again divided into two: first, setting forth the answer of untenability; second, refuting the rescues as untenable. In the first part there are two difficulties: the upper two lines present the difficulty that if atoms conjoin, one should have six parts; the lower two lines present the difficulty that if atoms conjoin they would have six parts, and if atoms share the same location, an aggregate would be like an atom. Just as a particle of aṇu-form is formed by the conjunction of seven atoms: there is one atom in the middle and six on the outside; if the middle atom conjoins with the outer six atoms, since the conjoined are six, the conjoining atom should have six parts; if, because atoms have no further parts, they do not conjoin with each other, then when the six face it, they would merge and abide together in one and the same location. Since they are in the same location, the aṇu-forms and so on should each be equal in size to a single atom.
