The Commentary says: About to explain the first two lines of the verse, this first introduces and marks the beginning. Here there is no objection [yet], but merely an interrogation of the reasoning of non-conjunction asserted by the opponent. 'Principle' (lǐ) refers to the doctrinal sense; 'purport' (qù) refers to the intended meaning. Both the doctrinal sense and the intended meaning are interrogated together, hence 'interrogate the reasoning'. Alternatively, the purport is itself the principle; the principle is the cognitive object (grāhya), where the intention aims.
