As for citta-dharmas, there are altogether six meanings: First, it is named citta in the sense of accumulating and generating, which belongs exclusively to the eighth [consciousness], because it accumulates all seeds and generates actual manifestations. Second, it is named citta in the sense of amassing, which belongs to the preceding seven pravṛtti-vijñānas which are capable of perfuming and amassing the seeds of all dharmas; or, accumulating and generating belongs to the actual manifestations of the preceding seven pravṛtti-vijñānas jointly accumulating and perfuming to generate seeds; or, it is named citta in the sense of amassing, which belongs to the eighth consciousness containing and amassing the seeds of all dharmas. Third, it is named citta in the sense of cognizing and thinking, because all are capable of cognizing and thinking upon their own portions of objects. Fourth, it is also named consciousness (vijñāna), in the sense of discernment. Fifth, it is also named mind (manas), in the sense of immediate succession. Sixth, or the eighth is named citta, the seventh is named manas, and the first six are named vijñāna; all these are divisions of citta.
