華言意識，如藏識名識，即意故；第六意識，如眼識名識，異意故。然諸聖教，恐此濫彼故，於第七但立意名；又以簡心之與識，以積集、了別劣餘識故；或欲顯此與彼意識為近所依故，但立意名爾。

In Chinese this is rendered as 'mental consciousness' (意識). Just as the storehouse consciousness is named consciousness [because] it is itself the mind (citta), [so this seventh is consciousness because] it is itself the manas (意). The sixth, mental consciousness (mano-vijñāna), is like the eye-consciousness being named consciousness [because] it is different from the eye [faculty]; [similarly it is different from the manas]. However, the various holy teachings, fearing that this [seventh] would be confused with that [sixth], only established the name 'manas' for the seventh; furthermore, it is to distinguish it from citta and vijñāna, since its accumulating and discerning are inferior to the other consciousnesses; or else, desiring to show that this [seventh] serves as the immediate basis for that mental consciousness [of the sixth], they merely established the name 'manas'.
