大者揀小為義，乘者運載得名，（名義互言）百數也，法謂世出世之法，故心法八、心所五十有一、色乃十一、不相應二十有四、無為法六，故為大乘百法也。明乃菩薩無漏之慧，以能破暗故。門以開通無壅滯為言，論乃揀擇性相，教誡學徒之稱。

"Great" takes setting aside the lesser as its meaning; "vehicle" gets its name from conveying and carrying (name and meaning are stated mutually). "Hundred" is a number. "Dharmas" refers to mundane and supramundane dharmas; thus citta-dharmas are eight, caitasikas are fifty-one, rūpa is eleven, viprayuktas are twenty-four, and asaṃskṛta-dharmas are six; therefore they constitute the hundred dharmas of the Mahāyāna. "Understanding" (ming) is the undefiled wisdom of a bodhisattva, because it is capable of destroying darkness. "Gateway" (men) is expressed in the sense of opening up without obstruction. "Treatise" (śāstra) is the designation for discerning essence and characteristics and instructing disciples.
