Fifth, contrasting the other five categories with the upakleśas to clarify establishment and exclusion in terms of the presence or absence of characteristics: Those that possess one and lack four are included among the upakleśas; the other dharmas are not so, and thus are not upakleśas. The five sarvatraga dharmas, merely because they are common to the three natures, pervade the nine planes, are continuous, arise together, and moreover are not upakleśa defilements—these five characteristics being different—are not subsumed under the upakleśas. Although the five viniyata dharmas are neither continuous nor arise together, merely because they are common to the three natures, pervade the nine planes, and are not upakleśas—these three characteristics being different—are not upakleśas. Although the eleven kuśala dharmas are not common to the three natures, and are neither continuous nor arise together, merely because they do not pervade the nine planes and are not upakleśas—these two characteristics being different—are not upakleśas. Although the six kleśa dharmas are not common to the three natures, do not pervade the nine planes, and are neither continuous nor arise together, merely because they are not upakleśas—one characteristic being different—are not upakleśas. Although the four aniyata dharmas do not pervade the nine planes, and are neither continuous nor arise together, merely because they are common to the three natures and are not upakleśas—these two characteristics being different—are not upakleśas.
