初中，略有二種：一要略、二省略，今是要略。謂諸聖教中說菩提心乃有多門，如《華嚴經》五十九說菩提心有二百餘門，今此十二無不統取，故云要略。

In the first: "brief" has two kinds: first, an essential briefing; second, an omission briefing. Here it is an essential briefing. This means that among the sacred teachings, bodhicitta is spoken of through numerous gates—as the fifty-ninth fascicle of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra states that bodhicitta has over two hundred gates—and now these twelve subsume all of them without exception; therefore it is called "essential briefing."
