釋初難言：此因明宗不同諸論，此中但以局守自體名為自性，不通他故；義貫於他，如縷貫花，即名差別。前所陳者局在自體，後所說者義貫於他。貫於他者義對眾多，局自體者義對便少。以後法解前，不以前解後，故前陳名自性，後陳者名差別。

To resolve the first objection, we say: This doctrine of hetuvidyā is not the same as other treatises. Here, it is merely that being restricted to maintaining one's own entity, without extending to others, is termed "intrinsic nature"; that whose attribute runs through others, like a thread stringing flowers together, is termed "distinction". What is stated first is restricted to its own entity; what is said subsequently has an attribute that runs through others. That which runs through others corresponds to many; that which is restricted to its own entity corresponds to fewer. One clarifies the prior by means of the subsequent property, not the subsequent by means of the prior; therefore what is stated first is termed "intrinsic nature", and what is stated subsequently is termed "distinction".
