The commentary says: This third section points out, explains, and concludes accordingly. 'Such many assertions' recapitulates the previous nine faults. The three clauses of 'because' below explain the causes of the faults. 'Are called fallacies of thesis-statement' is the general conclusion. 'Because they exclude the gateway to the specific characteristic of phenomena' explains the reason for positing the first five contradictions. The meaning here is: the qualificand (dharmin) of the thesis is called the 'specific characteristic' because it is restricted to its own substance and is not shared with others. The cognition of the proponent, the opponent, and the adjudicator is called the 'gateway' because it is able to illuminate and reveal the specific characteristic of the phenomenon. In proposing the property (dharma) and the subject possessing the property (dharmin), one intends to generate concordant cognition in the other; now, when stating the thesis-meaning, the other's cognitive understanding is generated in reverse; once a deviant cognition has arisen, correct understanding does not arise, and there is no way to illuminate and understand the meaning of the proposed thesis, hence it is called 'excluding the gateway'. Moreover, the specific characteristic itself is called the 'gateway' because it is able to generate the cognition of the opponent and the adjudicator. Generally, when proposing a thesis-meaning, that which can generate the other's cognition may be called a gateway; since the first five thesis-proposals do not allow the specific characteristic to genuinely generate the true cognitive understanding of the opponent and the adjudicator, they are called 'excluding the gateway to the specific characteristic of phenomena'. 'Because they do not permit establishment': 'permit' means 'capable of existing'; if the basis of the thesis is without fault, the thesis can possibly be established. Since the basis is already unestablished, it further requires establishment, hence the proposed thesis does not permit establishment. Therefore, within the pseudo-theses, the next three faults are posited.
